IDENTIFYING HISTORIC VEGETATION AND LANDSCAPE CONDITIONS IN THE COLUMBIA WETLANDS, USING HISTORIC PHOTOGRAPHS.

The Columbia Wetland Stewardship Partners are concerned with the long term health of the Columbia Wetlands and the Columbia River. To achieve our mandate of maintaining and stewarding the system, we need to develop a better understanding of the long term processes that have defined the present condition of the river and wetlands. To assist in our understanding of historic conditions in the wetlands, we have collected historic photographs, with some dating back to 1883.

The objective of this project is to compare the historic conditions in these old photographs to present day conditions, to help understand the degree of change that has occurred over time. We collected photographs from several archival sources and then attempted to locate the site at which the photographs were taken, using Google Earth and local knowledge from members of the Partners. Several photograph comparisons are provided here, a much more extensive collection of photographs are included in the files of the Columbia Wetland Stewardship Partners.
